Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Hou Po) 1 liang (30g), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chen Pi) 1 liang (30g), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhi Gan Cao) 5 qian (15g), Poria (Fu Ling) 5 qian (15g), Alpiniae Katsumadai Semen (Cao Dou Kou) 5 qian (15g), Aucklandiae Radix (Mu Xiang) 5 qian (15g), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Gan Jiang) 7 fen (2g) |
【Method】 |
Grind the medicinals into powder and take 5 qian (15g) as one dose. Add 2 zhan of water and decoct it with 3 pieces of sheng jiang until 1 zhan water remain, remove the dregs and take it warm. It can also be prepared as a decoction by adjusting the medicinal quantities based on the original ratio. |

Moves qi to eliminate distention, warms the center and dries dampness. |
【Indication】 |
This formula is indicated for the pattern of spleen-stomach qi stagnation caused by cold-damp. The symptoms are distention, fullness, pain in the stomach cavity and abdomen, no desire to eat or drink, lassitude of the four limbs. The tongue is white and greasy. The pulse is deep and wiry pulse. |
【Pathogenesis】 |
Hou Po Wen Zhong Tang is indicated for pattern of cold-damp injuring spleen and stomach. Cold has property of coagulation and stagnation, while dampness has property of sticky and cloying. Distention, fullness, pain in the stomach cavity and abdomen, no desire to eat or drink, lassitude of the four limbs are symptoms of abnormal qi ascending and descending due to qi stagnation by cold-damp encumbering the spleen and stomach. Therefore, the correct treatment method is to move qi to eliminate distention, warm the center and dries dampness. |
【Application】 |
1. Essential pattern differentiation Hou Po Wen Zhong Tang is commonly indicated for the pattern of spleen-stomach qi stagnation caused by cold-damp. This clinical pattern is marked by distention and pain in the stomach cavity and abdomen, white and greasy tongue coating. 2. Modern applications This formula may be used in biomedically defined disorders such as chronic enteritis, chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer, leukorrhagia when the patient shows signs of qi stagnation caused by cold-damp. |
